Child's Play aims to encompass a curriculum that is responsive to the developmental phases of childhood and the nurturing of the child's imagination in a school environment. That encourages creativity and free thinking.
Activities offered are based on the house and garden. These include sweeping, gardening, cooking, building, looking after animals, singing, listening to stories, helping to prepare the meal table, cutting fruit, painting, clay modelling and drawing. Children learn to enjoy building, using the natural materials in the room to make their own constructions and patterns. Practical experience helps the child develop confidence and capabilities. Child's Play also seeks to nurture the senses through watercolour painting and singing, beeswax and clay modelling.

The core curriculum of Child's Play is the British National Curriculum, which will be enhanced by the inclusion of some 'Steiner Waldorf' principles of education. This method of using several forms of education is known as Pluralism; in essence it means that we are using the best of everything.
Child's Play has a truly Natural feel to it's environment, all our furniture and equipment is made from the highest quality natural wood and fibres.
Each child is special and our teachers provide a structured learning programme based on your child's individual needs. Because the Early Years are critical in a child's development, physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially, our aim is to work together with parents to develop key learning skills.
These skills include 'listening', 'speaking', 'concentration', 'persistence' and 'cooperation'. Guidance in these skills help to prepare children for their learning journey into their future
The poem below provides a good description of the varied curriculum made available to the children of Child's Play;
'I like to look and listen
I need to touch and try
I want to smell and sample
And ask the question 'Why?'
Give me time to wonder
To imagine and pretend
Space to run and bend and stretch
Share secrets with a friend
I want to hold and handle
I must play to understand
For I need to know so many things
To find out who I AM!'
The six areas of the curriculum are listed below:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
This area covers important personal and social skills, which children need to develop. We develop the child's confidence in meeting new people, facing new situations as well as their ability to focus, concentrate and meet challenges. We enable them to develop independence in all the activities within the unit, and help them to play, co-operate and share with their peers. We actively encourage their ability to understand, express their feelings and respect the beliefs and traditions of different cultures.
Communication, Language and Literacy
Included here are the important pre-reading, pre-writing, listening and speaking skills. We develop book handling skills, enjoyment of sharing books and the ability to listen and reflect on stories. Emergent writing is encouraged along with the ability to listen to others.
Mathematical Knowledge and Understanding
Skill and language are important concepts the children need to develop before they are ready to begin formal Mathematics. At Child's Play we offer a wide range of practical activities, understanding of numbers, mathematical language, shapes, size, position and simple problem solving.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
This area focuses on the understanding of natural materials, the environment of the child, information technology skills and the ability to plan and design. We enforce the children's experience of handling natural materials such as sand, water and clay. We develop their awareness of their own environment, and offer opportunities to use programmable toys and recording equipment. Construction kits and reclaimed materials are also readily available.
Creative Development
In this area, children experience a variety of art activities, including creating pictures, collages and models as well as experimentation with colour. Our range of musical activities include the use of instruments, development of singing and the response to music through movement. We provide the children with a wide range of media with which to experiment, and encourage their ability to handle and control tools or instruments in the appropriate manner.
Physical Development
Children must develop their strength and skills to learn to control their bodies in both large and fine movement. We aim to increase their agility, co-ordination, awareness of space, body control and ball handling skills through PE lessons. We offer swimming sessions to promote water confidence. Fine motor skills are developed through handling equipment and toys that require control and strength to manipulate. Through this part of the curriculum each child develops skills and understanding, meets challenges, and grows in the self esteem and independence required to make the transition into the Primary School
